The bagpiper of Morlaix

Operation GALATÉE 203 took place in March 2024 in the town centre of Morlaix and was devoted to a remarkable 17th-century sculpture. Standing at the corner of rue Pont de Notre-Dame and rue Carnot, at a height of only 2.50 metres, this statue has watched the people of Morlaix go by for nearly three centuries, withstanding the weather and the ravages of time. The figure is particularly well preserved and shows many details that are still visible, such as the clothing, a hat, and a bagpipe that bears witness to the importance the Morlaix area already gave to music at that time.

The aim of operation GALATÉE 203 is to digitise this remarkable piece of Morlaix heritage in 3D and to enrich the digital inventory the PRIAE devotes to representations of instruments and musical practices from Antiquity to the Baroque period. Beyond its value for conservation, this 3D document opens up many possibilities for public engagement, bringing often overlooked heritage to light through immersive, contemporary means.
