Present in medieval iconography from the 8th century, the rebec is a monoxyle bowed string instrument. It has a pear-shaped sound box, a rounded back and a neck. It is fitted with a soundboard pierced by two sound holes and strung with two, three or four gut strings tensioned by pegs.
